My thoughts on Aquaman (2018)

The people who know me well must have known that I love superhero movies. I watch almost every Marvel Hero movies. From Iron Man to The Avengers. I myself think that 'superhero' should be a movie genre. This movie that I'm going to tell you about is a superhero movie. I watched it two weeks ago all by myself. Well, don't get me wrong. I like watching movies alone at the cinema. It gets me to be more focused on the details and able to record in mind all the wonderful (and not wonderful) parts and bits of those movies. It's not all bad or weird.

Anyway, back to the movie. It's Aquaman. I know what you think. It's not a Marvel movie. Aquaman is a DC comics character. And it has been well known that Marvel and DC fans do not get along that well. Not that I avoid watching DC movies, I'm not really interested in watching them. The movies are too dark for me. However,  Aquaman (and Suicide Squad) are not as dark as the others. One of the reasons why I watched them.

Aquaman tells the story of Arthur Curry(Jason Momoa), a hybrid between a human, Thomas Curry and an Atlantean and a princess,  Atlanna (Nicole Kidman). The princess ran away from an arranged marriage and was saved by Tom Curry,  a lighthouse keeper. The two fell in love and not long after,  they had Arthur. When the boy was three, some Atlantean soldiers invaded the lighthouse in attempt of taking Atlanna back to marry her betrothed. A promise is a promise, the queen decided to go back into the ocean to protect the two men she loved.

Years after,  a grown-up Arthur Curry became the Aquaman. He has got the strength of an Atlantean,  and also their ability to breathe underwater. He also could communicate with sea creatures.

One mission involving a group of pirate who attacked and massacred some crewmen in submarine earned Arthur a new enemy,  David Kane. His father,  Jesse Kane,  the leader of the pirates,  died during the attack and David promised his father to avenge The Aquaman.

Another problem appeared when Arthur's half brother, Atlanna's second born and the current king of Atlantis,  Orm, had a plan to attack the surface because the people up there had done lots of damage to the ocean. He was forming alliances with the leaders of the ocean to execute his plans.

Mera (Amber Heard) , one of the princesses in Atlantis overheard the plan and tried to convince Arthur to stop Orm's plan, only to be refused by him, because The former king of Atlantis had casted away and left Atlanna to be killed because she had Arthur. The Aquaman changed his mind after after a big and strong wave came from Atlantis,  swept away some parts of the surface, nearly killing his father.

With the help of Mera and Vulko (Willem Dafoe) , an Atlantis' advisor who had secretly trained and protected Atlanna's firstborn to one day defeat Orm and take his throne, Arthur snuck into Atlantis. Orm found out and later challenged him on a fight to earn the king's throne. Athur was close to be defeated when Mera decided to take him away from Atlantis. The two started their journey to find The Trident of Atlan,  the first king of Atlantis. If Arthur could find it,  he would be the true king of Atlantis and able to stop Orm's plan. Can the Aquaman save both the ocean and the surface? Where exactly is the Trident of Atlan? What really happened to Atlanna?

As I've said before,  this movie is different from the other DC movies. It brings a fresh,  more colorful and exciting story to the DC universe. The story is quite good and exciting to follow, although I think it's not the strength of the movie. I was mesmerized by the visual and audio effects in this movie. Especially the factual part of how the Atlanteans' hair would look like underwater. The interior and exterior of Atlantis was wonderfully designed. All the sea creatures were shown well. The thrill I felt when I was watching this movie is more or less similar with the thrill I felt watching Avengers: Infinity War. It also showcased it's grand war elegantly. If I could give a suggestion for this movie, is to add a little more witty humors in it. They've tried,  and it adds some delight to the movie but I think they could've added more. So far,  I have more pros than cons of this movie. Oh,  and by the way,  Jason Momoa rocks!

Grab some tickets fast and go watch Aquaman with your loved ones. Cheers!
